Alexandra Waierstall

Alexandra Waierstall, born in England, raised in Cyprus, and based in Düsseldorf since 2004, is a choreographer and artist. Her conceptually and physically driven works manifest in choreographies, installations, texts, films, and images. Through experimenting with diverse production structures and artistic exchange practices, she creates works for theatres, galleries, museums, and urban spaces. Her practice is also defined by longstanding interdisciplinary collaborations with musicians such as Düsseldorf-based composer and pianist Volker Bertelmann alias HAUSCHKA, London composer Marios Takoushis, as well as visual artists Marianna Christofides and Horst Weierstall. Thematically and conceptually, her focus lies on artistic projects that heighten awareness of ecological issues and socio-political themes. Her works have been presented in Germany, across Europe, and internationally (Canada, Brazil, South Korea, and China). Since 2006, she has also been regularly invited by national and international universities and festivals to give workshops and lectures. Until 2016, she co-directed TheArtSpace in Düsseldorf with her father, visual artist Horst Weierstall — a “project space for moving ideas” across artistic disciplines. Together, they curated around 70 exhibitions. She is also co-founder of the interdisciplinary festival NO-BODY in Nicosia, Cyprus.
